Before the dam was built summer floods inundated most of the valley, depositing layers of rich silt. Flood levels were as much as 30' above winter levels at Aswan; now the variation is less than 8' Lowlands are still flooded today, but the Nile now longer carries any silt. Between Luxor and Qena.
