Nuclear Power
Perhaps one of the most surprising
statistics about Alabama is its reliance on nuclear power.
In 2003 Alabama was 5th in the nation in power generated from nuclear
reactors. About 25% of Alabama's electricity is generated from the two
plants in the state: the Brown's Ferry Nuclear plant (on the Tennessee
River), which is ranked 6th on the Energy Information Administration's
(EIA) list of 100 Largest Electric Plants, and the Joseph M. Farley
nuclear plant (near Dothan, Houston County), which ranks 96th.
