Non-metallic MineralsNon-metallic minerals (also called industrial minerals) are defined by what they are not: they are substances extracted from the earth that are not used for energy (coal, petroleum) nor from which metals are extracted. In 2003, Alabama ranked 17th among states in our nation in the value of its non-metallic minerals production. That production was dominated by limestone and dolomite, and sand and gravel (Figure NM1).
