Alabama's navigable waterways are used for recreation and transporting freight. In 2003 most of the freight was either coal or forest products. The Tennessee-Tombigbee waterway is the largest such project in the United States.

Freight moves through Alabama by road, rail and water. In 1997 (the last year for which complete data are readily available), transportation of freight that originated within the state by whatever measure you choose was dominated by road.
